Local SEO foundations for small businesses

Start with information customers can use

Local SEO is not a shortcut to a particular ranking. It is the ongoing work of making your business information clear, consistent and useful when people search for a service in a place. Search engines and customers both need to understand the basics: what you offer, where you work and what someone should do next.

The foundations below are practical housekeeping. They are worth doing whether you manage them yourself or ask someone to help.

1. Keep your business profile accurate

Your Google Business Profile should describe the business customers will find when they click through. Review the name, contact details, opening hours, service areas, categories and website link. Update it when something changes rather than treating it as a one-off setup task.

Use real photographs, services and information that you are comfortable showing publicly. Do not add locations or claims that do not reflect how the business operates.

2. Make core details consistent

Your website, business profile, social accounts and established directory listings should not disagree about basic facts such as business name, telephone number, address or service area. Inconsistency can confuse a prospective customer even before it affects a search result.

Create a simple review rhythm for your own information: check it when opening hours change, a service is added or your contact route changes.

3. Write pages for real customer questions

Location words are useful when they accurately explain where you work. They become unhelpful when they are repeated without context. A stronger page explains a service, the type of customer it helps and any relevant local or travel-area detail in natural language.

For example, a service page can cover the problem you solve, the process, likely questions and the right enquiry path. That gives visitors substance; it is more useful than adding a city name to every sentence.

4. Ask for genuine feedback, responsibly

Genuine customer feedback can help people evaluate a business. Ask after a real interaction, never invent reviews and do not pressure someone to give a particular rating. If you publish feedback on your own website, make sure you can support the wording and permission behind it.

5. Keep the website technically understandable

Search visibility also depends on basics such as crawlable pages, descriptive page titles, accessible links, sensible image descriptions and mobile-friendly content. These are foundations, not a promise of a position in search results.

If your current site is difficult to update or the key information is buried, it may be worth reviewing the structure before adding more content. Our guide to deciding whether a website needs a redesign can help you make that call.

How this fits a London website

For a London business, local visibility needs to sit alongside a website that explains the offer clearly in a competitive market.
